I'm steve, i'm 38 years old and I have just started my life over. I was a prisoner of the world of drugs for 25 years. I found recovery on march 3,1998 when once again the police came bursting in my door. this time I took the opportunity to stay clean after a 7 month stay in the "HOTEL INCARSERATION". | My addiction has taken me to places that no one should ever go, as so many of us have been. There is nothing that I wouldn't have done for my drugs. stealing, using people, degrading my self and even taking anothers life all for the ability to get and use more drugs was a daily thing that I had to do. like so many others, I was powerless over my addiction. I started using drugs at the age 13. It was only smoking pot and drinking at first, what could that harm, I had my whole life ahead of me. well by the time I was 14 I had become a well rounded stoner, snorting cocaine and crystal meth. Eatin mushrooms, droping acid and a few things that I don't think are even around any more today. I was off and running and there was nothing that was going to stop me. I ended up with a real nice bunch of friend that showed me some better ways to get the most out of your high. So at the age of about 15 and a half I stepped up to the world of intraveiniouse drug use... Now as cool as it may seam to be a 16 year old junkie, there are many things that where a real problem. Like having a good family that loved me and cared about me, so I quickly had to get them out of my life inorder for me to flower in to the real "hard core bag of shit" that I so inspired to be. Now I had a good family and there was no drugs or abuse going on with in the family stuctucture. that made it easy to get away with alot of things becouse they didn't know what to look for. I took full advantage of that I assure you. At the point that It was discovered that I was into the drugs, It was really to late for my family to do any thing to help me. There really wasn't to much that a family could do back then to help some one on drugs, unlike today with drug recovery being as big as it is. Besides, I would not have been to welcoming to the interfearance of my getting loaded. So they painfuly watched me flush my life down the shit hole for what must have been an eternity in hell for them. While in jail this last time, I took a good look at my life, my self, and I got some help. there is (thank god) a program with in the walls of the california instatutional system that gives some hope and education to addicts that are sick and tiered of being sick and tiered. I spent 5 1/2 months of the 7 months that I was locked up in this program learning that I wasn't just a hopless drug addict that was destine to die with no family, no self worth and nothing but a needle in my arm. It was truly the best thing that could have happened to me. now at the time, I wasn't very greatful to the judge and the sheriffs department for the stay in there hotel, but now that I look back on it, with a clear head and a humble heart, I am very thankful that it all happened the way it did. And I am greatful that some one in the system has the compation to have created such programs inside the walls of correctional facilitys so that those who truly seek help with there seamingly hopeless addiction to drugs, can find a way to over come this. My love for the addict that still suffers is very real in my heart. I know what it is like to be in the grasp of the power that addiction has on us.

I was introduced to the program of NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS while in jail. "That is not for me" I thought. when I was released I started to attened some of there meetings thanks to the judge ordering me to do so. After about 2 months of attending meetings, some thing stange happened, I started to like going. I heard other addicts share there stories and I listened to how they deal with daily issues and how they get one more day clean be using the spiritual principles that make up the program of NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS. I now go becouse I know that it is were I belong. I am no longer ordered there by a judge, I am there for my recovery. If you ask me, there is no place better than NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS for any addict to be. there are NA meetings world wide and the fellowship is growing every day... There must be a good reason for that. I go to as few as 6 meetings a week and up to as many as 10 or 12. I am involved with the " hospitals & instatutions" sevices of NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS. That is where I first heard the message of hope from a couple of addicts who took time out of there day to come in to the jail and share with us there stories and share the the expeariance, steingth and hope of there recovery. The basic text of NA states that we can only keep what we have by giving it away as it was so freely given to us... I try to give away as much as I can, It is truly one of the many things that I have found in NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS THAT KEEP ME FROM RETURNING TO ACTIVE ADDICTION ON A DAILY BASIS. | If you share my new found happyness in the program of NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] and tell me how NA saved your life. If you have the need to get a new hold on your life due to the powerlesness of your addiction then e-mail me at the same address and ask for help. I will be glad to direct you to the nearest location for you to hook up with the people in the program of NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS.
